Be Your Own Hair Doctor

Healthy hair starts with healthy follicles. Like any other part of your body, your scalp needs a good supply of oxygenated blood and nutrients to thrive. Most women don’t realize this. While you’ll still want to pay attention to what’s on top, taking care of your hair follicles can also make a big difference. Consider what follows your inside-out hair-care program.

Strengthen your heart and hair. Vibrant health is all about good blood flow, so anything that’s smart for your heart is great for your hair. Since the heart is a muscle, exercise actually strengthens and enlarges it so that it pumps more blood with more force on every beat, including way up to your head.

Clean up your arteries. Not only can the typical high-fat diet plug up arteries, but it can also plug up follicles, which can cause thinning. In fact, studies have found a link between heart disease and hair loss. The connection is likely due to a naturally occurring chemical called nitric oxide—its job is to prevent clotting, dilate blood vessels, and, as a sidelight, nourish hair. When atherosclerosis damages the walls of your vessels, less nitric oxide is produced. To keep arteries clean and your hair gorgeous, eat a heart-healthy diet—lots of fiber, complex carbs, protein, and “good” (unsaturated) fat.

Get stress under control. If you’re in a constant state of high anxiety, follicles can actually shut down. And this is true for psychological as well as physical stress. (Crash dieting, for instance, can trigger hair loss.) To help your body deal with stress, aim to get 1 extra hour of sleep a night. Skeptical? Try it for 1 week.

Pump more iron. Not getting enough iron can spell trouble for red blood cells—crucial to the health of hair follicles. The Daily Value (DV) for iron for women is 18 milligrams, but vegetarians and those who are pregnant need significantly more. Keep in mind that drinking coffee and tea hurts iron absorption, while taking in vitamin C helps it.

Break bad habits. Anything that negatively affects your overall health doesn’t stop at your hair. So, smoking and drinking, for example, can make your hair look and feel less healthy. Just think: healthy body, healthy hair.

Deploy the secret weapon. All these previous changes take time, so while you’re waiting for them to kick in, use a hair-thickening shampoo. It actually works. With a protein-rich formula that penetrates hair and a protective layer that seals in moisture, hair-thickening shampoo can increase the diameter of each strand by as much as 50% to create the illusion of thicker hair.

I noticed a signifcant amount of hair loss when I took buproprion (Wellbutrin, also in some smoking sensation meds) for several months in a row.  Not the case with SSRIs, at least for me.  I thought thinning hair was just part of getting older, but I'll review some of the tips at the top.  I'm gonna get some of that Aussie Tousel Me Softly I've seen on teevee and try it; gotta feel 20-something again when you can!

I have been loosing my hair and can't figure out why!  This article is very interesting!  I eat healthy so maybe I am low in iron or under to much stress!  I am going to try the thickening shampoo and see if that helps!  I am only 31 so hair loss should not be happening.

For CAROL (11-3-09), I also saw the infomercial on "Wen".  It sounds too good to be true so I researched it on the internet.  You should too- before you buy this expensive product.  There are other products that have the same ingredient that the "Wen" products do...for alot less $$$$.  If you are currently using the product, please post your opinion as I am interested in your results.  I have a extremely thick and unruly head of hair!  I have tried every kind of product!  I worked for a salon that carried several different lines (KERATASE, AQUAGE, LOREAL PROFESSIONAL).  The product that I still feel works the best is the PANTENE moisturizing line. Any pantene shampoo works for me- but then I use the Moisturizing conditioner.  I would spend the $$ if I felt the salon products were better.....but, they are not for me.  My co-workers thought I was crazy!  There is a KERASTASE product called OLEO RELAX SERUM which can be used on wet (before blow-drying) or dry (to smooth out) hair.  The product is expensive but can be used sparingly.  Not carried in alot of salons- look online.  This is the only product that I spurge on- I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pantene products- especially the new Beautiful Lengths line!!!!

SHANNON (WHO WROTE ON 11/10) - I too have been experimenting hair loss......a close friend of mine who's een cutting hair for about 20 years suggested adding omega 3's(fish oils), zinc, D and biotin to my diet...... so on top of my multi..... I'v been taking every last one of them daily and it seems to be working..... the drain in my shower doesn't look like a cat fight when I'm done..... since its a lot of supp., I do spread them out through the day...... like the guy at Vit. store told me "whatever your body doesn't need will..." well you know.... good luck

Shanon...I had the same problem with hair loss but mine was after having 3 kids.  I did find out that my hair loss was medically related.  You may want to discuss with your healthcare physician.  You may have a deficiency somewhere that is affecting your hair.  Even after kids, my doctor told me that prenatal vitamins were really good to keep you strong and healthy from HAIR to toes.

I love the Panten Restorative products.  I have bi-polar hair - straight on the top, curly underneith.  I get the conditioning I need without the additional weight.  Since my hair is so thick, the hair dryer can do a toll on my hair.  My hairstylist comments every visit on how healthy my hair is.

I LOVE the Pantene Restorative products.... and my hair loves it too.  I used to used ThermaSilk until they went away.  I switched and have been extremely happy.  The only drawback I would have is that I wish the containers were larger so I wouldnt have to buy it so often.

Thank's for all the good information given. The vitamin works too. For my hairloss I have used a product named Hairseptic. In PUerto Rico I bought it at Sal's Beauty Supply and it really works. I know that some hairstylers use it when they have a chemical burn on hair. Beleive me it really works. God bless you.

WOW, I didn't know about the relationship between diet and hair loss.

By Tangie on 11/7/2009 8:51:46 PM

Some good info in here!  I've got long, curly hair that has been graying since high school.  It's genetics, so I decided long ago I wasn't going to win the dying battle and gave up.    My hair really seems to do best if I wash it with shampoo less- I just rinse it out thoroughly every day and condition it well regularly.  For curly hair, I would recommend you read through a book I found once.  I think the name was "Curly Girl Hair" or something REALLY close to that.  I didn't agree with everything she had written but a lot of the advice really worked better for me than what info I could find and I have a lot less frizzy days now!

I am 45 and, until recently had very thick, full hair.  My hair is also greying (my dad was completely grey at 18 so I'm quite sure this is genetic), so I have it professionally colored every 4 weeks (thank goodness my DD is a hair stylist).  I started taking GNC Hair, Skin, and Nails formula about 3 weeks ago but haven't really noticed any difference yet.  Since I color my hair I'm afraid to use the vinegar or baking soda as I don't want to strip my auburn color.  Has anyone successfully used these products without stripping the color?  Thanks in advance!

By Suzan on 11/3/2009 8:30:05 PM

The best thing I have used is "Spring Valley- Hair, Skin & Nails Vitamins", you can find it at Walmart.  It is a vitamin and contains biotin as well as collagen.  I have been using it for over 6 months now and I found that my hair is thicker, shinier, and breaks less, I lose less hairs daily.  My nails don't break as much.  My skin has more elasticity , less wrinkles.  I am almost 49 and most think I am in my early 30's.

I have a hard time finding a shampoo that delivers resultsFrown. I think I've purchased every kind! I wonder if there is a hair vitamin that actually works or at least some kind of shampoo and conditioner for conditions like mine; which are oily on top and a little dry on the ends!! I am currently trying Pantene and crossing my fingers!

Thank You all for the good advise. Will try the different advice here. My hair has become thin after heart failure and will do anything to get a little more

I also grey very fast and it is very stubborn, now I get blonde highlites and you can't tell the grey near as fast. I have medium brown hair.

By Ruth on 11/1/2009 9:12:06 AM

i've tried so many hair products over the years but none of them seem to really do wut they claim. my hair always looks dull, its frizzy, and alot of breakage at the ends. i've always wished to be one of those women who could wash their hair and go, but if i did that, mine would look like a rats nest. i've tried the mayo, olive oil, and eggs, yuck! they r all so hard to wash out. recently i saw an infomercial for a product called "wen" which claims that "washing" your hair is bad. hmm... maybe they r onto something

I have always had thick, healthy, long, red hair...recently i have started having an itchy scalp and dry skin on my head. Last weekend I attended a pre-halloween party and used hairspray to hold my style...i never use any product or stylers except occasionally a CHI flat iron. Could it be from the hairspray-maybe it irritated my scalp? Or maybe it's the change in weather and using the heater more is drying out the air in the house? I don't know. Help please??Undecided

I am a believer that exercise that gets the blood pumping (cardio) helps hair grow faster, fuller and healthier.

By Jen on 10/30/2009 1:27:48 AM

My favorite thing is a little coconut oil when I get out of the shower. Really helps my dry, coarse, frizzy hair. You can get it at almost any grocery store or Whole Foods-type place. Just rub a little in your palms and run it through your damp hair. But just a little!

I do know that baking soda works great; I just a a Tablespoon to my shampoo, rub it together and wash it my hair.  I only do it every so often though.  My stylist thinks that Patene is the worst product for the hair; she claims it coats the strands and suffocates the follicles.

MY GRANDMOTHER USED VINEGAR RINSE ON MY HAIR TO BRIGHTEN UP MY BLONDE HAIR WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. MY SISTER USES A COMBINATION OF PEANUT BUTTER, MAYO & AVACODO ON HER HAIR. I HAVE ALSO USED OLIVE OIL ON MY HAIR. NOW THAT I'M OLDER I USE 1 OR THE OTHER FOR A MONTH THEN TRY THE NEXT 1.

I am a young 65 year old.  My hair is really getting thin on the sides.  It's permed and highlighted.  I have only 30% gray.  Went to my dermatoligest who suggested I take Biotin.  Safe with no side effects.  She said it would take about 3 months to see a difference.  Also good for splitting nails.  Hope this works, been taking it 2 weeks now.

I have dry hair so I try to use shampoos & conditioners that contain natural products. I stay away from anything that has drying agents such as alchohol. I like shampoos & conditioners that offer alot of natural ingrediances such as olive oil, advocado, vitamin E, biotin  all these things are healthy & good for dry hair.

I used to have horses, and the girls who do the horse show circuit (days & weeks on the road sleeping in the horse van) use the specialized shampoo & conditioner the horses use (to cut down on excess clutter). Horse skin is even more delicate than dog skin, & we all know dog skin is so delicate, human shampoo should never be used on dog skin. I also noticed their hair was thicker, shinier, luxurious & more manageable. So for the past 4+ decades I have only used "Main & Tail" (It can be gotten with horse supplies, or WalMart, or Feed & grain stores). Now that I am almost 60, I have noticed that my hair is a little more than 50% gray. I have never colored it,  except for burgundy at the "Holidays". My hair is always thick, shiny, luxurious, & manageable. I am of German & Scots/Irish decent. I get a lot of comments on my hair & people needing to touch my hair, which I still wear long. I will never stray from my precious "Main & Tail" shampoo, & conditioner. And for hands & nails... "Main & Tail Hoof Conditioner" can't be beat.

By L E on 10/28/2009 6:03:11 PM

Will definitely try the vinegar/water/conditioner suggestion for thinning hair....I have been dying my hair for years, many years...always had healthy hair until just recently when I began to notice more hair in my brush. also noted the comment about thyroid and I do take thyroid medication now and will take this into consideration. thanks, guys...love all your comments

Baking Soda, a handfull with your normal amount of shampoo in your hand will strip anything in your hair, from wrong haircolor, you know we've all done it, to styling chemicals, etc. out of your hair, it will also dry your hair out. Need to control those locks? Try rinsing with a can of beer, handfull of good ol mayo or a smashed up alvacado. Also warm water opens the hair stand to accept baking soda, baby shampoo will really strip it if combined, then condition with the beer, mayo or alvacado and always end with cool water to close the hair cuticle. Shiney healthy hair is what you'll end up with...good luck girls.

I am a retired hairdresser of 44 years. Years ago when I was 23 yrs. old my hair started to fall out. Well needless to say I was shocked. I had talk to a hairdresser who at that time had been in the business already 22 years. I asked him what I should do. You will never believe what he told me. He said to use what our Mothers' had used when we were younger and that was the old fashion vinegar rinse. 1 ounce vinegar to 8 ounces of warm water. Right after you shampoo your hair and rinse your hair then pour the vinegar rinse over your hair then I put the conditioner right over that. Leave on a few minute and rinse off. Believe me this works. About 3 years ago my hair started falling again and I used the same old vinegar and it really did work. I hope every one finds the same results I did. After giving birth to my son I noticed my too thick hair shedding excessively.  Doctors consulted indicated it was normal.  This excessive shedding continued till my overly thick hair was now overly thin.  I continued to consult doctors and do medical testing with no answers.  Finally, I read in a women's magazine that a low level of iron can cause hair loss.  (My son was 13 by now) I finally had found my answer.  A few doctors over the years had told me my iron level was borderline and to take a multivitamin with iron. Since they stated it so causually I didn't think it mattered. Besides the iron made me constipated.  After reading the magazine article I started taking Slow-Fe.  My hair stopped shedding almost immediately and has  thicken.  I only wished my OB-GYN would have told me to take iron supplements after giving birth for the excessive blood loss I experienced.

I have the problem of gray hair coming through so quick.  I've had it since I was 16 and tired of it.  I color my hair once a month and it's getting to the point where I could be doing it every 2 weeks.  Any suggestions on how to fix that.  I do know that stress is a huge problem.  With trying to lose weight and my husband having cancer and his one daughter being a royal pain.  (32 year old and thinks we owe her a living)  just alittle bit of stress.  Don't know what shampoo to try to help save the color longer or help slow down the color disappearing to soon.

By Sheila on 10/28/2009 1:07:11 PM

How do you get rid of the top layer frizzies?  I have long staight hair but I want the smooth look.  I use rinse out conditioner and leave in conditioner, but once my hair dries it's back.  Even with a straightener!

Hair does grow from the inside, so I take a multiple vitamin and flaxseed oil tablets.  Flaxseed is known to thicken the hair and it has worked for me.  Right now I have braids, to give my hair a rest from perms.

This makes a lot of sense.  My hair started thinning about 2 years after I graduated college.  Until that point, I had always been a very physically active person.  Once I graduated college and started a stressful, sit-down job with a 30 minute commute, my luscious locks began to lose their thickness and body.  Obviously my lack of physical activity and increased stress (along with the junk food that goes along with it) has taken a toll on my hair.  It's time to make some changes!

Best hair thickening shampoo/conditioner is Folicure. I love how it makes my hair look and feel.  It is not sold in most drugstores, I have purchased it at beauty supply stores and the price is comparable to drugstore brands at $5 a bottle.
