I DO THANKSGIVING AT MY PARENT'S HOUSE. MY BROTHER AND HIS FAMILY COME DOWN, WE EAT UNTIL WE ARE MISERABLE AND THEN MY SISTER IN LAW AND I DO ALL THE CLEAN UP. WE HAVE TO MAKE MOM SIT DOWN AND REST. SHE MAKES ENOUGH FOOD TO FEED AN ARMY!
We have a new tradition now that we all work. We go to a great restaurant for turkey and afterwards to my house for lots of deserts. I will throw a few turkey breasts and a few drumsticks in the oven for sandwitches later. We can now spent time together with out all the work and fuss. My children thought this up because they thought I worked too hard. I love it and wouldn't have it any other way. Rae
Thanksgiving is not the same being that my dad had passed away 4 years ago. He was always "CHIEF COOK AND BOTTLE WASHER" as he use to say. Even though my mom cooked for the holiday. Well since then, I have taken on the tradition of Thanksgiving at our home (with my husband and 2 teenage children). I have my side of my immediate family over for dinner and it is nice to sit together at the dinner table for converstion. We don't all get together much during the year, so it is enjoyable on Thanksgiving). It's a time also to be thankful that my mom is still here w/us at 81 years of age. And--she still insists on having Christmas dinner at her home w/everyone chipping in to help out and having the extended family come for dessert. That is a tradition that she very much wants to keep. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
I love celebrating Thanksgiving! It's a great time to have all your family and friends around and at the same time- have all this great tasting foods. Lots of fun and laughter........
My Great Aunt always hosted Thanksgiving dinner at her place until she went blind back in 1990, then it defaulted to my Grandmother for a few years. In 2006, my Grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's so hosting Thanksgiving has now been defaulted to me. I can still remember how wonderful my Aunt and Grandmother's homes would smell on Thanksgiving morning. I hope that my children will someday have wonderful memories such as that from my house. It is very tiring to cook for 15+ people, but I love seeing everyone enjoy the food and having the leftovers in my fridge for the last few years have been nice too! = )

family secret recipe (stuffing made from scratch)
We go to our daughters house. I cook everyday so it gives me a break and I we get to ploay with the grandkids It's great!
A simple recipe for country green beans:1 6-lbs, 5-oz. (food service size) can green beans, drained but not dry
1 large onion, chopped1 ham hockhandful granulated sugarsalt and pepper to taste (shouldn't need much salt because of ham hock)
- - - - - - - - - -Start at medium-high heat. Place ham hock and chopped onion in bottom of large, heavy pot. Pour drained green beans on top. Sprinkle with sugar. Cover. When inside of pot gets hot, reduct heat to low. (I have pots that jiggle, so I turn down the stove enough so that they don't jiggle.) Stir periodically (but do not overly stir) so they don't stick or burn. (I've never had this problem, but if you do, add a little water or chicken stock.) Cook 2 - 3 hours "low and slow" until desired doneness. After done, pull meat (toss fat) from hock and add to beans. Tastes like fresh! Enjoy!
To Debbie who posted on 10/20/09 . . . I hope this year's better for you. If you are a Christian, try going with the attitude of Matthew 25:40 "Inasmuch as ye did it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye did it to me ..." When I choose that attitude, it makes it a lot easier for me to swallow the pill. : )
My brothers and their families will be coming in for Thanksgiving. To make things simpler, mom ordered a turkey breast and a ham from QVC! All we have to do is heat them up. Mom will make the mashed potatoes and I will bring the other sides. For the remainder of the time that they will be in town, we've started cooking meals and putting them in the deep freeze. All we'll have to do is make a fresh salad and pop a dish in the oven. Mom insists on having meals for everyone and this preparation ahead of time allows her to spend as much quality time with her children as possible.
We have a son that has a birthday that will fall on Thanksgiving every few years and so it is always birthday party time also. Most of the time my husband will cook the entire meal, either at our home or at our daughters home.Happy Thanksgiving to all!
my husbands birthday falls on most thanksgiving days and we celebrate with odd dinners like fried chicken, chicken and dumpligs and of course a birthday boy cake of germann chocolate; which leaves the more traditional fare for Christmas.
We have Thanksgiving lunch or dinner at our home (the getting too old parents, ha ha) or at the home of our younger son and his family of 5. We invite our older son and youngest grand daughter, but they come only when they want, not often enough. The rest of the family, except my hubby, will eat other types of dinner. It is not about what you eat, but the time together with family and friends if they are invited. My hubby will still make a full turkey dinner, so I still have the mess to clean up, etc. So, we usually hold the dinner and ask the kids to bring sides. It has gotten so expensive to do this, over $100 even with their help. Carol in NC

When we were first married, and before the children, we would alternate between his family and mind for the holidays.Once my children came we stayed home and cooked. It has been about 39 yrs that I have been cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I just love the smell of the turkey cooking. I don't think I could go out. Nancy G. Alberta
HI Anonymous, I think I would just stay at home and cook for my family and myself. If I felt like she didn't want me and my family there I would just cook at my home and I would really enjoy myself. And I would do this every year. Thank you, Bonie Cochran
We have always went to my mother in laws, but I think she's getting tired of doing it. She makes stove top stuffing and a pre-cooked turkey then a bunch of sides she picks up at the grocery store. This year she says we're having pulled pork sandwiches and chips. I wish I would have caught on sooner, I think she's hinting that I should do it! We live an hour away and all the rest of the family live in the same town... I am used to 100% homemade holidays, I am worried ever since this year's "Easter Taco Bar" spread!!
It is so true, after your parents pass away things just aren't the same. My mother & father both were great cook's . And my mother fixed the Thanksgiving Dinner and everyone was invited & we have a very large family, but she didn't care she enjoyed doing it. But I have great memorie's so I will try once more to duplicate her wonderful fruit salad & pumpkin pie. & enjoy the Holiday. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, Debra
Sad but true once you lose your parents things are never quite the aame. As an adult it is hard to let go of memories from your past. I have 2 brothers and a sister in Texas and none of us can get it together. My husband has a hugh family but each year I work retail and the trip is too far since I would need to report the next day very early. So I do my best and whip up a feast just for my honey and I. I get up early to get the 28-lb turkey in the oven (yes I don't care if it is just him and I , the bigger the better)flip on the T.V. to watch the Macy's day parade while I make stuffin' and all the fixins. By late afternoon we light a fire in the fire place, pour ourselves a lovely martini and enjoy the rest of the day!!!
We will be having thanksgiving at my oldest sister's house. It's been there since Mom has passed away years ago. We all just love it there her home is bigger than the rest of us. We will have alot of guests and this year we have alot of the grown children pitch in with buying food which is a good thing. I will make my specialties from four layer chocolate cake to candied yams and so on. My sisters and brother will also help out as well. We are going to have a good time like always. We are keeping the tradition alive along with our Dad. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!
I host Thanksgiving at our home.. the more the merrier. I treasure family time, we live 150 miles from my mom, siblings,and their families ; and seldom get to see all of them more than once a year. This makes me realize how important family ties are so I make the most of the time I have with those close to us. We are fortunate to have 4 of our 5 children and all 3 of the grandchildren living close to home. However it would be "grand" if our daughter in Arizona and her family could make it home for the holidays. This economy is tough and it would be a miracle for this to happen. But I will keep the faith, as miracles do happen, and we all have so much to be Thankful for.I also make the usual trimmings and then add 1 extra dish, something not expected.. this year I'm do a seaford stew pot ... I'm allergic to the turkey and I have a daughter in law also who doesn't eat meat, but she'll enjoy the seafood.Happy Thanksgiving to all.Conine
My mother will be hosting for the first time in years and it is just Mom now, so hopefully the adults"kids" will make this a success as we all love to celebrate!
